McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP)

The McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP) is an intensive “boot camp” for swallowing.

Based on extensive research, the program focuses on using swallowing as an exercise and progressively advances patients toward more normal eating. Jen Carter has been a certified MDTP provider since 2008.

The program is based on principles of exercise physiology and rehabilitation including frequency of training, intensity of training, targeting both speed and coordination, and variability in muscle movements (“cross-training”).

This program is often used with patients who have chronic dysphagia and have not had success with less intensive swallowing therapy. MDTP “boot camp” is comprised of 15 treatment sessions—5 days a week for 3 weeks. The sessions are 1 hour in length with home exercises completed between therapy sessions.

MDTP follows a systematic framework to advance patients to safe oral intake with more variations in what foods and drinks can be successfully swallowed. Each patient will start the program at a level based on the results of their swallowing evaluation and will progress from there.

After 4 weeks of therapy and some homework, I can now enjoy eating almost all foods and feel I can eat in public again! Jen Carter was delightful to work with and extremely professional and patient. Being a nurse in a related field, I know many therapy centers and programs and this is far and above the most individualized, advanced therapy available.
